Plan to Achieve Self-Support

A Path to Success – Your Employment Network

A program offered by the Social Security Administration that allows you to set aside your income to help you pay for the things you need in order to reach a specific employment goal.

If you receive SSI or SSDI benefits from SSA and have expenses you will need to pay for (or, in some cases, already pay for) in order to help you reach an employment goal, you may qualify for a PASS Plan to help you.

If you receive SSI or SSDI benefits from SSA, you could potentially use a PASS Plan to help you achieve your goals.

Your PASS Plan

When you are pursuing a PASS Plan, you will need to decide on a specific employment goal and write out in detail:

Training Needed

What courses or classes will you be taking?

Steps to Take

You will need to write out, step-by-step, the milestones you need to achieve while pursuing your employment goal.

Your PASS is exactly that, YOURS! The more detail and effort you put in to your application
the better chance you have of it being approved by SSA.

If you are using a PASS to go back to school, just remember that getting an education is the first step to reaching your goal, it cannot be the goal itself.

FAQ

While the PASS Plan is an SSI work incentive, it can be used by anyone receiving SSI benefits or SSDI benefits if you can meet SSI income requirements

Yes! There is no limit to how many PASS Plans someone can use but you can only have one PASS at a time. You will also need to show SSA why you can no longer work at or find work in your previous employment goal for them to consider approving another PASS for you.

The PASS Plan allows you to pursue an employment goal that you choose and allows you to set aside income to help you reach your goal, and is highly individualized and unique to you. SSA is willing to help you pay for the expenses you need in order to reach your work goal if it means that eventually, you can reduce your reliance on cash benefits.

Not necessarily, it depends on the type of benefits you are receiving from SSA. If you receive SSDI benefits, you are not required to work at all while pursuing a PASS Plan goal. If you are only receiving SSI benefits, you would be required to work at least part-time while on a PASS Plan.
